Should we use the new method of scoring defense? The new method of scoring is trying to align our overall scoring with what happens in the real NFL world. Offenses score points and Defenses give up points. The difference is whether you win or lose. If you offense scores more than your defense gives up you win.
Our old scoring system started you out with a positive point total and as the game progressed and your defense gave up points and yardage it slowly decreased, but your defense could also score points by getting turnovers and TDs.
The new scoring system doesn't start you out with points, it only gives up points. For every TD scored against it is (-3) points. The only way for a defense to score positive points is to score (TDs, safeties), get a turnover (INT, Fumble Recovery) or a sack. Using this method the average team in the NFL last year scored (-6) points per game. Only 2 teams had a positive point total for the season.
This method offers a couple of things over last year. In prior years, you could pick almost any defense and it wouldn't necessary hurt you overall. It may not get you points but it wouldn't take away from what your offensive players did.
The new method means you can't just pick a defense. You would have to make sure you don't pick a dog, cause it could seriously hurt your point total.
